Irish Road Categories

These are the different categories of road in Ireland, with their speed limits effective from January 2005.

Motorways

Signposted in blue and signified by an M on maps and elsewhere (M1, M50, etc.). The speed limit on Irish motorways is 120 km/h (75 mph).

National Roads

Shown with an N on maps and signposts, these have green signs (N4, N20 etc.). The speed limit on national roads is 100 km/h (60 mph).

Regional and Local Roads

Other roads outside built-up and urban areas are designated Regional (R) or Local (L). Signposts on these roads are white and the speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph).

Towns and Cities

In built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h (30 mph). This applies to all urban areas and is the speed limit you should adhere to if in doubt.

Dangerous Roads and Bends

Special speed limits may apply to dangerous stretches of road. The may be 80 km/h (50 mph), 60 km/h (35 mph) or 30 km/h (19 mph) as indicated on the signposts.
