Irish Road CategoriesThese are the different categories of road in Ireland, with their speed limits effective from January 2005. MotorwaysSignposted in blue and signified by an M on maps and elsewhere (M1, M50, etc.). The speed limit on Irish motorways is 120 km/h (75 mph). National RoadsShown with an N on maps and signposts, these have green signs (N4, N20 etc.). The speed limit on national roads is 100 km/h (60 mph). Regional and Local RoadsOther roads outside built-up and urban areas are designated Regional (R) or Local (L). Signposts on these roads are white and the speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph). Towns and CitiesIn built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h (30 mph). This applies to all urban areas and is the speed limit you should adhere to if in doubt. Dangerous Roads and BendsSpecial speed limits may apply to dangerous stretches of road. The may be 80 km/h (50 mph), 60 km/h (35 mph) or 30 km/h (19 mph) as indicated on the signposts. |
